How and why to use primary domain names

Domain Names are the way in which users access a website - for example, "www.whitemenu.com". The purpose of domain names is to provide users with an easy and memorable way of doing this without having to concern themselves with the numbering system (IP addresses) that is used by computers to talk to each other.

All White Menu accounts come with a free domain in the format "your-restaurant-name.whitemenu.com", and you can choose to add your own custom domain names to make things easier for your customers.

In this case, it is important to ensure that you have one main Domain Name that all internet traffic is routed to. This is to ensure that search engines know that each of your domain names actually refers to the same website, and avoids duplicates in search engine results (very important for your SEO ranking!).

White Menu allows for this with the concept of Primary Domains. For example, you could register the custom domain name "www.your-restaurant-name.com" and set it as primary. Then, if any customers try to access your website via another domain name (such as "your-restaurant-name.whitemenu.com"), they will be redirected to the primary domain name.

To set this up, log into your White Menu account and select Settings from the top navigation. Scroll down to the Domains section and click on the "Edit your domains" button.

From here, you will see a list of domain names that apply to your website. If you have already selected a primary domain, this will be indicated by a tick next to the relevant domain name. To set another domain name as the primary, simply click on the "Set as Primary" button adjacent to the relevant domain name on the list.
